¡Hola a todos! Hoy vamos a discutir las diferencias entre el verbo saber y conocer (To know). Estas son las razones para usar To know en Español:

 

Saber

Se usa para hablar sobre hechos o habilidades aprendidas. Puede usarlo para hablar sobre información que ha memorizado o para decir que sabe nadar, dibujar, hablar un idioma, etc.

It is used to talk about facts or learned skills. You can use it to talk about information you have memorized or to say that you know how to swim, draw, speak a language, etc.

 

Cuando sabes de hechos.

When you know facts:

• Yo sé tú sabes leer, de lo contrario no puedes entender este articulo. I know you know how to read, otherwise you cannot understand this article.
• Nadie sabe que paso con Ana, no esta en su casa. Nobody knows what happened to Ana, she is not at her house.
• ¿Sabes que paso el fin de semana entre Lucia y Juan?  Do you know what happened the weekend between Lucia and Juan?
• ¿Sabes que paso con el jefe? Hoy no llego a la reunión. Do you know what happened to the boss? I can’t make it to the meeting today.

 

Cuando hablamos sobre información.

When we talk about information:

• • ¿Sabes a qué hora comienza la pelicula? Do you know what time the movie starts?
  • ¿Sabes donde esta el parque nacional? Do you know where the national park is?
  • ¿Sabes a qué hora llega el jefe? Do you know where the national park is?
  • ¿Sabes si Anita esta casada? Do you know if Anita is married?
  • ¿Sabes dónde hay un buen café? Do you know where there is a good coffee?

 

Cuando hablamos sobre habilidades aprendidas.

When we talk about learned skills:

• Yo sé cocinar las mejores empanadas en mi ciudad. I know how to cook the best empanadas in my city.
• Julian no sabe como usar la tecnologia. Julian doesn’t know how to use technology.
• El sabe trabajar muy bien porque es diligente, pero no sabe tratar a la gente. He knows how to work very well because he is diligent, but he doesn’t know how to treat people.
• Yo sé hablar en Español. I know how to speak Spanish.
• Anita no sabe nadar. Anita doesn’t know how to swim.

 

Conocer

Se usa mucho cuando habla de familiaridad.

It is used a lot when talking about familiarity.

 

Cuando hablamos sobre conocer a una persona.

When we talk about knowing a person:

• ¿Conoces a tus vecinos? Do you know your neighbors?
• No conozco a tus colegas pero conozco a tu jefe. I don’t know your colleagues but I know your boss.
• No conozco a muchas personas en esta ciudad grande. I don’t know many people in this big city.
• ¿Conoces a las personas que trabajan en la oficina en Ciudad de Mexico? Do you know the people who work in the office in Mexico City?
• Conozco a todos los empleados que trabajan en mi compañia. I know all the employees who work in my company.
• ¿Conoces a mi amiga Melissa? Do you know my friend Melissa?

 

Cuando conocemos a alguien por primera vez:

When we meet someone for the first time:

• ¡Que gusto conocerte! How nice to meet you!
• ¡Fue un gusto conocerte! It was nice meeting you!
• ¡Me encanto conocerte! I loved meeting you!

 

Cuando se habla de familiaridad de un lugar:

When talking about familiarity of a place:

• ¿Conoces Colombia? Do you know Colombia?
• No conozco Argentina pero conozco Chile. I don’t know Argentina but I know Chile.
• ¿Conoces el parque de los enamorados que esta en el centro de la ciudad? Do you know the park of lovers that is in the center of the city?
• No conozco esa ciudad pero, he escuchado cosas muy buenas. I do not know that city but, I have heard very good things.
• Conozco un buen lugar para ver el atardecer. I know a good place to watch the sunset.

 

Cuando se habla sobre conocimiento sobre una cosa:

When talking about knowledge about a thing:

• No conozco muy bien esta marca de carros. I’m not very familiar with this car brand.
• ¿Conoces este tipo de telefono? Do you know this type of phone?
• No conozco este dispositivo pero parece de buena calidad. I don’t know this device but it seems of good quality.
