Pronunciation rules with the R in Spanish

Pronunciation rules with the R in Spanish

The letter r is written and pronounced when we want to say a soft sound. For example, like the words “pera” “pear”, “cara” “face” or “arbol tree”. Words that START with r are always written with ONE but the sound is STRONG. For example: ROBAR (steal), RIO (river).

Words that END with r are always written with ONE but the sound is WEAK. For example: VER (see), MAR (sea), ACABAR (finish).

The double r, or rr, is used when the sound we want to represent is loud. Words like GUERRA (war), CARRO (car) or PERRO (dog).

On the other hand, the letter r is IN THE MIDDLE of a word, and the consonant it has before is L, N and S, its pronunciation is STRONG. For example: ENRIQUECER enrich, ALREDEDOR (around) or ISRAEL (Israel).
