Las vocales: Each vowel has just one sound

• A: cama/ tasa / mala = (sound: “ah”) = father
• E: pena/ nena / letra = (sound: “eh”) = met
• I: lima / piña /niña = (sound: “ee”) = see
• O: contar / cosa/ oso = (sound:”oh”) = law
• U: nunca / luna / cuna = (sound: “oo”) = pool

Letter C makes two sounds: “k” and “s”

• Ca: carton / cama / cola =”k” sound as in “can”
• Co: coco / cola /cosa =”k” sound as in “come”
• Cu: curar /cual /cuna =”k” sound as in “quarter”
• Ce: cena /cesar/ celos=”s” sound as in “center”

Letter G makes two sounds: “strong G” and “h”:

• Ga: gato / gastar / gala = just like “guy”
• Go: goma /gorro / gotas = just like “government”
• Gu: gusano / preguntar = strong G + “oo” sound
• Gue: guerrilla = just like “gay”
• Gui: guisado / guillermo = strong G + “ee” sound

“Y” and “LL” make the sound of “J” in English:

• Yo = like the Word “joy”

• Collar= as in “Jack”

The sound of the G can change when it has the vowel e or i next to it

• Ge: coger / generación= Just like “her”

• Gi: gimnasio / gitana = “h”+“ee” sound
