Connection Words In Spanish
Hola a todos, hoy vamos a hablar de las palabras que nos ayudan a conectar frases en Español. Estas son las comunes: 1) PORQUE – Because: “Porque” is a connector that is usually used in the middle of the sentence in both formal or informal situations. Juan no fue a la escuela porque estaba lloviendo. Juan didn’t go to school because it was raining. No como ensaladas porque soy alergica. I don’t eat salads because I’m allergic. No visito a mis padres porque ellos viven en otra ciudad. I don’t visit my parents because they live in another city. 2) COMO – Since: “Como” is usually used at the beginning of a sentence with a comma between the first and second statement. Como el museo todavía no esta abierto, vamos a visitar la catedral primero. Since the museum is not open yet, we are going to visit the cathedral first. Como va mañana va a llover, vamos a estar en casa. Since it’s going to rain tomorrow, we’ll be home. Como hoy es mi cumpleaños, vamos a celebrar este fin de semana en otra ciudad. Since today is my birthday, we are going to celebrate this weekend in another city. 3) A CAUSA DE – Because of Pablo no puede ir a la escuela a causa de su enfermedad. Pablo cannot go to school because of his illness. Nosotros no podemos viajar mucho a causa del trabajo de mi esposo. We can’t travel much because of my husband’s job. Yo no puedo participar en el carnaval a causa de mi religion. I cannot participate in the carnival because of my religion. 4) DEBIDO A – Due to, because of Voy a llegar tarde debido al tráfico. I’m going to be late due to traffic. No voy a la costa en verano debido a los huracanes. I don’t go to the coast in the summer because of the hurricanes. 5) GRACIAS A – Thanks to Juliana esta mejor gracias a sus medicamentos. Juliana is better thanks to her medication. Gracias a mi mama no necesito cocinar los fines de semana. Thanks to my mom I don’t need to cook on weekends. NOTA: These last three connectors mean that the cause is known by the interlocutor: Dado que, ya que – They are more formal than “como” and “porque,” and we can use them in the middle or beginning of a sentence. 1. DADO QUE – Since, given that Vamos a ir al supermercado dado que la tienda esté cerrada. We are going to the supermarket since the store is closed. 2. YA QUE – Since, because María no va a ir a la celebración ya que está enferma. Maria is not going to go to the celebration since she is sick.
